About Ryan Imgrund

Ryan Imgrund is a former educator from Hanmer in Valley East, Greater Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. He is 47 as of September 2026. His background includes biomedical science, infectious-disease research, education, and public communication of COVID-19 data.

This biography brings together Ryan Imgrund’s Sudbury roots, published research, contributions to SickKids school guidance, and selected public appearances. The publication and institutional links below provide further detail about the work and the roles recorded in each source.

From Sudbury to biomedical science

Ryan Imgrund’s hometown is Hanmer, within Greater Sudbury in Northern Ontario. His later work in science and education included an interest in the use of mathematics to understand infectious diseases.

A June 2020 NewmarketToday profile reports that he graduated from the University of Guelph with a degree in biomedical science. It describes epidemiology coursework and an undergraduate project with the Public Health Agency of Canada involving mathematical modelling of Campylobacter and E. coli. The same profile reports that Health Canada subsequently retained him to continue infectious-disease data analysis.

Published research: Campylobacter and laboratory testing

Ryan Imgrund is listed as a coauthor of a 2009 study comparing E-test and agar-dilution methods for Campylobacter antimicrobial susceptibility testing. Published in Diagnostic Microbiology and Infectious Disease, the paper examines two laboratory approaches to testing how bacterial isolates respond to antimicrobial agents, alongside the costs of performing those tests.

The research used Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli isolates from retail chicken purchased in southern Ontario. Its publication record lists the Laboratory for Foodborne Zoonoses at the Public Health Agency of Canada in Guelph as an institutional affiliation.

The paper appeared in October 2009, volume 65, issue 2, pages 168–174. Its DOI is 10.1016/j.diagmicrobio.2009.07.008.

SickKids school guidance contributions

Ryan Imgrund is named in the teacher group within the reviewers, contributors, and acknowledgments section of SickKids’ 2021 guidance for school operation during the COVID-19 pandemic. This credit documents his contribution to the guidance process.

The guidance brought together expertise from health care, education, epidemiology, and other stakeholders. It considered school operations during the pandemic, including infection prevention, classroom arrangements, ventilation, and student well-being. Imgrund’s acknowledgment in this document is distinct from his coauthorship of the research study below.

Coauthored research in JAMA Pediatrics

Ryan Imgrund is also a coauthor of the Back-to-School COVID-19 Simulation randomized clinical trial examining masks and hand-to-face contact, published in JAMA Pediatrics in 2022. The author group included researchers from SickKids and other Canadian institutions.

The study examined whether requiring children to wear face masks changed how often they touched their faces during simulated school attendance. It addressed a specific behavioural question relevant to the discussion of mask use in schools. The paper lists Imgrund’s affiliation at publication as Biostatistics, Southlake Regional Health Centre, in Newmarket, Ontario.

Published online on October 24, 2022, the article appears in volume 176, issue 12, pages 1169–1175. Its DOI is 10.1001/jamapediatrics.2022.3833. The publication record identifies the full author group and the study’s methods and findings.

COVID-19 data and public communication

During the pandemic, Ryan Imgrund discussed infection trends, risk assessment, and the interpretation of COVID-19 statistics in public interviews. The 2020 NewmarketToday profile describes his use of the effective reproduction number, Rt, to examine changes in transmission as Ontario reopened.

In an October 2020 Raptors Republic interview, he discussed pandemic analysis, reproduction numbers, risk assessment, and the outlook for live basketball. The conversation connected statistical questions with decisions affecting everyday activities.

In January 2021, CityNews featured Ryan Imgrund in a discussion of virtual learning and Ontario’s vaccination plans. These appearances form part of his public communication work during that period.

Clinical research advisory work

In a November 2021 announcement issued by dicentra, the clinical research and consulting firm named Ryan Imgrund to its scientific advisory board. The announcement described an intended role supporting recruitment for COVID-19-related trials through data analysis, insights, and logistical support.

This is a dated account of the appointment announced in 2021. Together with the journal articles, institutional acknowledgment, and interviews linked above, it provides a record of several areas of his research and public communication work.
